Import of fertilizers into Ukraine is growing across all groups, indicating a potential recovery of agribusiness profitability — analysts

Based on the results of the first eight months of 2025, farmers used about 3.42 million tonnes of fertilizers, up 20% compared to the same period of the previous year. At the same time, actual consumption remains below forecasts by 8–10: it was expected that by September 1 the use would be 3.7–3.8 million tonnes.

According to the official sources, fertilizer imports for the reported period rose to 1.97 million tonnes, of which over 1.14 million tonnes are ammonium fertilizers. The growth in supplies is explained both by market expansion and by reductions in domestic production. The volume of fertilizer production in Ukraine is estimated at 1.45 million tonnes; exports from the country remained minimal — about 21.6 thousand tonnes.

There are signs of monopolization appearing in the import structure: one market participant supplied more than 330 thousand tonnes of products. At the same time, leaders in different segments differ by their profile of activity, as companies specialize in specific types of fertilizers and suppliers.

Import of ammonium sulfate is growing especially quickly — by the end of the year its volume could reach a record 500 thousand tonnes.

In the first half of 2025, the amount of urea imports for the first time exceeded Ukraine’s domestic production by more than two times.
